This position comes as part of Scotland’s plans to extend worldwide business reach. In addition to his current role at CBRE, Mr. Maclean will serve as part of a team of overseas and Scotland-based envoys to extend worldwide business reach and facilitate international trade. The envoy will also be responsible for promoting and representing Scotland’s export interests, solidifying trade across the entire Emirates.

The United Arab Emirates is now Scotland’s 11th largest export market with direct Scottish exports totaling £1 billion. A significant number of Scottish companies have been operating in the UAE for some years and Scotland has received many Emirati private and institutional investors including Emirates Airline, Masdar and TAQA.

Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work, Scottish Government, “I am confident that the appointment of Nick Maclean, as the Scottish Government’s Trade Envoy to the UAE, will help foster the continued development of trade and investment links between our countries and regions, as well as supporting those Emirati nationals who are currently living, working and studying in Scotland. Over the last 10 years, Scotland’s relationship with the UAE has grown considerably and our links are extensive. I believe there is great potential for our countries to collaborate further in support of our respective aims and ambitions.

Commenting on his appointment, Nick Maclean said, “I am truly honoured with this appointment. There are great opportunities to further trade between the two nations. Scotland is a global leader in many of the sectors for which UAE has demand, and closer relationships between the countries will help UAE businesses access Scottish goods and services.”

“I am looking forward maximising business opportunities for the two nations in the lead up to Expo 2020,” Mr. Maclean concluded.

Nick Maclean has lived and worked in the UAE for over a decade and was named one of the 100 most influential people in Dubai, according to Arabian Business magazine. He was noted as one of the leading individuals to have contributed to the city’s vitality, making it a pivotal point on the globe, in the areas of finance, tourism, trade, energy and architecture.
